Everything is but a dream in the world of Zhang Hui. Inspired by her own childhood memories, her work is enchanted by the fleeting essence of youth, evidenced in the blushing warmth that radiates from her subjects' cherubic cheeks. In the bustle of Art Week, Zhang’s suite of sculptures and paintings is slowing things down, transporting viewers into charming scenes of pastoral life.
Zhang’s work is the focus of a new exhibition at Singapore’s Yang Gallery, now on view until February 1. Entitled 终于等到你, which translates to Finally waiting for you, the show explores the magic of childlike dreams, inviting audiences to reconnect with their own joyful memories.
Central to the exhibition is a collection of bronze sculptures that transforms the ephemeral into something enduring. The solidity of the material contrasts with the whimsical energy of Zhang’s figures whose titles – such as “Waiting for You,” “You are my poetry” and “Sing a song” – evoke playful romance and heartfelt connection. Whether holding hands, riding bicycles or cheerfully kicking atop a stool, her creations celebrate the wonder of life’s most tender moments.
